Before you buy

Plug-in hybrid or fully electric?

Count your daily kilometres. A plug-in hybrid saves money only on the distance it covers on electricity. If your usual day fits inside its electric range and you charge every night, the petrol engine rarely runs. If it does not, you are mostly driving a heavy petrol car.

Long drives are where it earns its place. Beyond the battery the engine takes over, so a trip down the N-5 or into the north does not depend on finding a charger. A fully electric car does that trip on the motorway charging network, which is good on the M-2 and thin in parts of Sindh.

Charging is slower and smaller. Most plug-in hybrids charge on AC at home or at a destination charger; only some take DC, and at modest power. A full charge is a few hundred rupees at the home rate. The electric cars on sale cost less to run once the daily distance grows.
